Instructions for Transnasal Esophagoscopy Patients

You have been scheduled for a transnasal esophagoscopy.  This is a technique which allows total visualization of your esophagus or food pipe, by passing a thin, flexible fiberoptic scope through your nose into the back of your throat and into your esophagus. It is a safe and effective alternative to traditional esophagoscopy, which requires sedation and a large scope being passed through the mouth.  Prior to your procedure, we ask you not to take any solid food for six hours.  Clear liquids can be taken up to four hours prior to the procedure.

When you arrive in the treatment area, your nose and throat will be numbed using topical anesthesia (no injections will be required).  After adequate numbness is achieved, the scope will be passed along the floor of your nose, into the back of your throat and into your esophagus. Your entire esophagus, including the entrance of the esophagus into the stomach, will be examined. A photograph through the endoscope may be taken.  Biopsies may be taken as well with a small cup or brush device, which is passed through a channel in the scope.  The procedure should take 5-10 minutes.  The time that you spend in the office will be approximately 60 minutes.

Subsequent to the procedure, you may have mild soreness in your nose or throat for a few hours, which should resolve. You are allowed to eat anything that you want after the procedure once the numbness in your throat subsides.  If biopsies are taken, you should call the office in about a week to obtain the results.

If you cannot keep your appointment, please give the office at least 48 hours notice (2 business days) or a charge of $50.00 will be billed to you.
